Chapter 11
A pleasant silence filled the breakfast room aside from the gentle scraping of cutlery. Weston looked over at Beth, seated beside him at the head of the table. Her back was to the grand window that had made the breakfast room one of his favorite places in Hannover Grange over these past two months. Morning sunlight spilled in through the glass, bathing his wife in a heavenly glow that highlighted her soft beauty.
They had been married for just over two months now, and Weston still could not believe that Beth somehow managed to become more beautiful each dayâeven when she had a bit of marmalade from her toast stuck to the corner of her mouth. Absentmindedly, he leaned forward and swiped it away with his napkin.
âThank you,â Beth mumbled, self-consciously dabbing at her mouth with her own napkin.
Weston leaned back in his chair and returned to his delicious ham. Despite the early issues they had had with Mrs. Sharpe and a few other mild bumps along the way, their cook had never proven to be anything less than perfect. He was very glad for that. He did not want anything else causing undue stress for Beth.
As they enjoyed their breakfast, Weston reflected on their marriage thus far. They had grown closer every day, though Weston of course still took his cues from Beth. He knew without a doubt by now that his feelings were growingâeven more so than they had over the course of their friendship prior to their marriage. Still, Weston could not bear the idea of putting any more pressure on her. She had done so much for him already. He hardly deserved to ask for more, though that selfish, hopeful little spark in his heart constantly urged him to do just that.
He glanced over to her once more with a contented smile. He took it as a good sign that she had started eating breakfast with him every morning instead of simply taking a tray in her bedroom like many married ladies chose to do.
Weston frowned, noticing that Bethâs fork had stilled in her hand, her eyes narrowed in concentration as she poured over a journal, slowly reading each word and line.
âIs something wrong?â he asked around a mouth full of food.
Beth snapped out of her reverie with a delightful giggle, pointing at her own mouth.
âGoodness, forgive me,â Weston mumbled. He quickly covered his mouth with his napkin, swallowing discreetly.
After her laughter died away, Beth gave a weary sigh. âI am just double checking everything. I cannot believe my family will be arriving tomorrow.â
Weston gave an understanding nod. He knew how excited she was to see her parents and siblings, grandparents, and Uncle Dalton, Aunt Winnie, and their children. She was also terribly nervous. This would be her first time showing them the new home she had worked so hard to make their own.
Surprising even himself, Weston abandoned his beloved breakfast and knelt down beside Beth. âWe will have a wonderful visit. I know you have everything under control.
